It’s “Post Time” at the Shreveport Symphony

SHREVEPORT – February 25, 2005 – The Shreveport Symphony Orchestra will present an eclectic concert when conductor candidate No. 4 Arthur Post conducts the orchestra Mar. 19 at Shreveport ’s Civic Theatre. Post will demonstrate his mastery in conducting and music selection through a program called “Commedia.” For this concert, he has chosen a program that will include Bolcom’s Commedia for (almost) 18 th Century Orchestra, De Falla’s El Sombrero de Tres Picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) Suite No. 1, Daugherty’s Dead Elvis and the masterful Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8. In addition Benjamin Kamins , bassoonist & impressionist is the featured soloist in Dead Elvis.

Now in his third season as Music Director of the San Juan Symphony,ARTHUR POST is building a reputation for groundbreaking programming that combines the masterworks of the orchestral repertoire with music reflecting local land, cultures and concerns. He also enjoys a distinguished record with major orchestras in the United States and Europe . As a guest conductor in Germany , Arthur Post made his debut with the Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin in 1993 and has conducted the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in a recording for the BMG label. During the 2002-2003 season, he led a touring production of Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio segreto with France ’s Orchestre National de Lille. Other international appearances include the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse , Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Costa Rica, Singapore and Jerusalem Symphony Orchestras and Israel Sinfonietta. In the United States , Mr. Post has led concerts with the Detroit , Grand Rapids , Houston , New Jersey , North Carolina , San Antonio , Syracuse and Virginia Symphony Orchestras and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as those of Ann Arbor , Annapolis , Columbus , Fargo-Moorhead, Harrisburg , Hartford , Illinois , Modesto , San Juan , Wyoming and York . Mr. Post has collaborated with leading artists Lorin Maazel, James Galway, Sarah Chang, Hilary Hahn, Norman Krieger and Maxim Vengerov.

BENJAMIN KAMINS is currently Professor of Bassoon at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. He accepted this position in 2003 after having served as Principal Bassoonist of the Houston Symphony for twenty-two years. Before accepting his current position at Rice University, he taught for sixteeen years as a member of the Shepherd School faculty in a adjunct position. During that time he had the opportunity to teach many wonderful students who currently play in orchestras and teach in universities throughout the U.S. and abroad.

After studies with Norman Herzberg in his native Los Angeles, Mr. Kamins began his professional career, at age nineteen, as Associate Principal Bassoonist of the Minnesota Orchestra. During his tenure with the Minnesota Orchestra, Mr. Kamins made solo appearances in works of Vivaldi and Haydn. As a soloist with the Houston Symphony he was often featured playing concerti of Mozart, Weber and Vivaldi. In 2002 he played the world premiere of Pierrot, a concerto composed by Larry Lipkis and commissioned for him by the Houston Symphony. He recorded the Mozart Concerto with Christoph Eschenbach and the Houston Symphony for IMP Masters. In addition to his positions in Minnesota and Houston, he has served as a Guest Principal Bassoonist with the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony.

The 2004-2005 Season of the Shreveport Symphony is supported by grants from the Louisiana State Arts Council through the Louisiana Division of the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council with funds from the City of Shreveport . ADMISSION: $7, $18, $30, and $36, with $5 student tickets for seating anywhere in the theater.

RESERVATIONS: Call the Symphony box office at 227-TUNE (8863) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or visit the office on the fourth floor of The Strand Theatre, 619 Louisiana Ave. The box office opens at noon on concert days at the Civic Theatre.

PARKING: Limited valet parking is available for $3. A shuttle will depart one time from Uptown Shopping Center at 6:15 p.m. A second shuttle will depart from the AmSouth parking garage located on the corner of Milam and Market Streets at 5:30 p.m. Both shuttles will continue to make pickups at the AmSouth garage every 10 minutes until concert time.
