ZUILL BAILEY is considered one of the pre-eminent cellists of his generation. His rare combination of compelling artistry, technical finesse, and engaging personality has secured his place as one of the most sought-after cellists today.
A consummate concerto soloist, Bailey has appeared with the symphony orchestras of Chicago, San Francisco, Minnesota, Dallas, Louisville, Milwaukee, Nashville, Toronto and Utah, among other leading orchestras around the world. He has collaborated with such conductors as Itzhak Perlman, Alan Gilbert, Andrew Litton, James DePriest, and Stanislav Skrowacezewski, and has performed with musical luminaries Leon Fleisher, Jaime Laredo, the Juilliard String Quartet, Lynn Harrell and Janos Starker.
This season Bailey appears with the Indianapolis Symphony for Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 1 in 2010, and in 2011 for the Dvorak Concerto (in performances recorded for commercial release); North Carolina Symphony for the Beethoven Triple; the National Philharmonic at Strathmore, San Luis Obispo Symphony and the Las Vegas Philharmonic for the Dvorak Concerto; and with many other regional orchestras. He appears in concert throughout the US, playing the Bach Cello Suites and mixed recital programs, with dates at the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, The Schubert Club’s Music in the Park Series, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Bravo! Vail Valley Festival, Chamber Music Sedona, the Mesa Arts Center, and at the Tuesday Musical Club Artists Series in San Antonio.
The 2010/2011 season also sees the release of a new album for Telarc International; Brahms Works for Cello and Piano. The disc, recorded with Bailey’s longtime friend and duo partner, pianist Awadagin Pratt, follows up last season’s critically acclaimed Complete Bach Cello Suites. A tremendous popular success, the Bach Suites debuted on the Classical Billboard chart at #2, and remained in the top ten for many months afterwards.
