The SSO provides many in-depth programs for students in our region. These include concerts in the schools in addition to larger format concerts at central locations.
SSO on the Go brings small instrumental ensembles (string quartets, jazz trios, or wind and brass groups) directly into classrooms and school assemblies. These 30-35 minute
interactive performances offer basic introductions to orchestral instruments and work best for small to medium-sized audiences. Designed primarily for grades K-3.
Shreveport Symhony musicians are available for mini-residencies with your school’s band and/or orchestra programs. Activities can include master classes, leading sectionals, sitting in on rehearsals, etc. Designed to support middle school and high school music programs.
Conductors have the most visible, and yet least understood, role in an orchestra. Maestro Butterman visits your classrooms to demonstrate the various ways in which conductors help shape the music—from starting and stopping, to speed, volume and more. Students will actively particpate and have a chance to try their hands at leading their classmates! Designed for grades K-5.

Fourth and fifth-grade students will discover the thrill of live orchestral music through our February concerts held at the Riverview Theatre. This year, we will link music with language arts and literacy through our performance of the fun and entertaining “The Composer is Dead”—a work for narrator and orchestra based on the book by Lemony Snicket (author of the “A Series of Unfortunate Events” books). Through this lively 50-minute concert, students will learn about the instruments of the orchestra, famous composers, and important musical styles. Curriculum guides and lesson plans will be sent to participating teachers and schools to aid their preparation for this extraordinary experience.
