Curry Adds Spice to Shreveport Symphony

SHREVEPORT – The Shreveport Symphony Orchestra will spice things up when conductor candidate No. 3 William Henry Curry conducts the orchestra Feb. 12 at Shreveport ’s Civic Theatre.

Curry will demonstrate his mastery in conducting and music selection through a program called “Symphonic Champions.” For this concert, he has chosen a program that will include Weber’s Overture to Euryanthe and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F Major, Op. 36. In addition Kostyantyn Platonovich Travinskyy, the Gold Medal Winner of the 2004 Nena Plant Wideman Piano Competition, will perform Prokofiev’s Concerto for Piano No.1 in D-flat, Op.10

William Henry Curry is in his seventh season with the North Carolina Symphony. He came to North Carolina by way of New Orleans , where he served as Resident Conductor of the New Orleans Symphony. Maestro Curry serves as the Interim Artistic Planning Advisorand the Artistic Director for “Summerfest” and all other North Carolina Symphony summer programs. He also conducts classical, educational and pops concerts throughout the state.

A native of Pittsburgh , Maestro Curry started conducting at age 14. His first major appointment was at age 21 when he was named Assistant Conductor of the Richmond Chamber Orchestra. On that same day, he was called in for a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, to replace a conductor who had fallen suddenly ill. Maestro Curry's unexpected debut was hailed by the critics and audience alike. He went on to serve as Resident Conductor with the Baltimore Symphony for six years (1978-1983) and with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for two years (1983-1985).

Maestro Curry's guest conducting appearances have included performances with the Cleveland , Houston , National, Detroit , Denver , American and San Diego symphonies. His international engagements have included performances in Israel with the Israel Camerata Jerusalem, in Bangkok with the Sai Jai Thai Orchestra and in Taipei with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan. Last season he made appearances as a guest conductor with the Indianapolis , Detroit , New Jersey , and Mississippi Symphonies, and the Tulsa Philharmonic. In December he serves as guest conductor for the New York City Ballet in their Stamford , CT productions of Balanchine’s The Nutcracker with the Stamford Symphony. He has recently conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the new Walt Disney Concert Hall, made his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and returned to the Indianapolis Symphony.

Born in Ukraine in the year 1981, Mr. Konstantyn Travinskyy began exhibiting his natural and exceptional musicality at the early age of 5. During this time Mr. Travinskyy was living in the North Caucus with his grandparents. Realizing Mr. Travinskyy’s great potential and precocious musical abilities, he was immediately enrolled in lessons with Natalia Zajtseva. By age 8 he participated in his first competition in Kiev where he won 3 rd prize at the 5th City Festival of Children’s Music. Residing in Kiev for the next 13 years, Mr. Travinskyy continued his studies with Professor Tatiana Chalaya, Professor Olga Sherstyk, and Professor Boris Fedorov.

In 1999 Mr. Travinskyy graduated from the Special Music School named after M. Lysenko and was accepted to the Ukrainian National Academy of Music. While pursuing a master’s degree in piano performance with Professor Boris Fedorov, Mr. Travinskyy received an invitation to continue his artistic career under the tutelage of Van Cliburn gold medallist (1973), and Artist-In Residence at the University of North Texas- Maestro Vladimir Viardo .

In the fall of 2003, shortly after his arrival in the United States , Mr. Travinskyy began participating in his first international competitions held in this country. Within two weeks Mr. Travinskyy won 1 st prize at the Crescendo Music Competition in Tulsa , Oklahoma ; 2nd prize at the Kingsville Concerto Competition, and 1 st prize at the Texas Music Teachers’ Association Concerto Competition. As recent 1 st prizewinner of the Wideman Piano Competition 2004, Mr. Travinskyy is pleased to be sharing his passion for music with audiences in Louisiana , Mississippi , Washington D.C. and in a performance in Chicago which will be broadcasted nationwide on WFMT classical radio station.

One of the promising young pianists, Mr. Travinskyy is becoming well known for his Liszt interpretations and has enlightened many listeners at his performances in the United States, Greece, Italy, Russia, and Ukraine. Other prizes include: 4 th place at the Valsesia-Musica International Piano Competition 2004 in Varallo, Italy, Finalist of the V International Competition 2004 for Young Pianists in memory of Vladimir Horowitz (Kiev, Ukraine), Grand prize and Overall Winner at 2nd International Music Competition for Young Pianists 2001 “Valsessia Musica” (Scopello,Italy), 1st prize at the International Competition “Art of the XXI Century”2000 (Vorzel, Ukraine),1st prize at 4th International Piano Competition for Young Pianists “Konzerteum” 1998 (Greece), and 3rd prize at 1st International Music Festival after Paderevski, (Glybchitsa, Poland).

The Shreveport Symphony Orchestra Guild sponsors Travinskyy’s appearance.

The 2004-2005 Season of the Shreveport Symphony is supported by a grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council through the Louisiana Division of the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council with funds from the City of Shreveport . PARKING: Limited valet parking is available for $3. A shuttle will depart one time from Uptown Shopping Center at 6:15 p.m. A second shuttle will depart from the AmSouth parking garage located on the corner of Milam and Market Streets at 5:30 p.m. Both shuttles will continue to make pickups at the AmSouth garage every 10 minutes until concert time.
